DR JERNAIL S. ANAND CHAIRS DOKSIRI 2024: 6TH LITERATURE AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL, ASSAM [9th-13th Feb].

The 6th Literature and Cultural Festival of Assam, Doksiri 2024, organized by Shabda, Literary and Cultural Foundation, Jorhat, Assam, concluded on 14th of February, 2024. The function took off on 9th Feb., during which a rich variety of Assamese arts and culture was on display in the Festival of Handicrafts, Dances, Drama, Poetry and fertility rites that made the entire show a veritable delight for the viewers. While around two thousand enthusiasts visited the event on different days, more than 200 poets mostly of Assamese recited their poems on different days. The most important thing about the function was its location in the heart of a village called Mil Gaon, 30 km from Jorhat. The stage was constructed with bamboo sticks, across a small rivulet connected by a wooden bamboo bridge. It all looked entirely a figment of romance, to see people performing on the one side of the river, while the audience were seated on the other side. There were book stalls, and stalls on which Assamese cloth, drinks, eatables were sold. Tea was available all the time free of cost. It was going on between a tea garden, and some bamboo living units, a poultry farm, and a small tank which housed a crocodile also.

It was a great feeling to get back to the heart of nature, high rise trees on all sides, thick vegetational growth, and your direct touch with the earth, water, the sun, and the night in its pristine glory.

Who made it all possible? To conceive of such a grand event in the heart of a village, was no ordinary job. It was Mr. Ujjal Powgam, a young man, who was chairman of the Shabda Foundation. Shabda means the word, and they have really accomplished a great vision: to take poetry to every village.

Dr. Jernail S, Anand, was the Chief Guest on 13th of February, the concluding day of the function. In his presidential speech, he made a strong plea that the direction of scientific development must now be towards preserving nature, and making the life of man more comfortable, without harming the natural assets of mankind. Dr. Anand also inaugurated a Library and observed that in order to fight the corruption of our society, it is essential we start giving more preference to arts and literature. The Guests of Honour included poets from Bhubaneshwar, Dr. Prasana Kumar, Mr Prakash Gautam [Nepal] and UdaiThulung, [Darjeeling]. The presence of the local intelligentsia, Ms Punya Devi, Professors of the University and Members of the Sahitya Akademi, Jorhat, film maker Jayanta Nath, and film actor, Arun Nath, Jun Moni Gogoi added to the relevance and intensity of the message of this great event. Some other major poets who participated included: NilaKantaSaikia, Parviz Hussain, HorenGogoi, Bijoy Rabi Das, Bijoy Kumar Swarnakar, Dipankar Bora, KuntalakalyaniHandique, Pradip, Kumar Gogoi, Dr Poran Boruah, Dr ManikSaikiaBijoyaGogoi , Bidyut Boruah, Rupa Hazarika, Krishna Kai Mazi, Bipul Kumar Regan, Binuphukan
