DR JERNAIL S ANAND "ENCOUNTERS FROM DIABETES TO PHILOSOPHY"

ENCOUNTERS

FROM DIABETES TO PHILOSOPHY

In one of my travels, I was seated alongside a young doctor. He was telling the passenger, a student from Germany, sitting next to him, how diabetes can be controlled or checked from taking place. The conversation interested me because I am also a sugar patient . He said that if we control our intake of diet, we can control sugar from happening.

I interposed here with my own way of looking at an ailment. We are affected not only by what we eat, but also by what we think.

It diverted the conversation from diabetes to philosophy. My favourite domain. And then to spirituality. And soon I realised I will have to invite Lustus too to dilate upon these issues.

The young doctor had a fair understanding of life systems matched by the ideas of philosophy. He thought that spirituality deals with religion and God, and religious practices.

I pointed out that we may realise it or not, we are part of a universal spirit. And spirituality is getting back to the spirit of Creation and to the Creator. Religion is a training camp to train people how to lead good lives. Conflicts are man-made, and can be avoided.

The conversation then turned towards the theory of Karma. He said it confuses him when The Lord tells Arjuna that it is I who is doing everything. What Arjuna was doing, was it his will or Lord's.

It was a difficult situation to handle. I told him about my thoughts about Karma and fate etc
Karma I said is action but action takes place first in the mind. So, to control your actions, you need training of the mind. In Sikh religion, there is a lot of focus on Shabad. Words are more powerful than swords . Guru Granth Sahib is a word document which Sikhs consider as the living Guru. So, when you read Gurbani, and assimilate the message, it affects your actions.

Karma is a sort of your duty at a particular moment.

What you ought to do. How the 'dharma,' wants you to act. Lord Krishna wants your action to be detached. Not dictated by any feeling for a reward. All actions done with a purpose lose validity. The man should act out of a feeling of universal good. Gods will reward you for your action, may be with Moksha (Deliverance).

What is fate? God writes the fate of each man, he said.

I shared my view that man is the master of his destiny, but alas! he is its slave too. It has to be understood first of all that man is not an innovation. He is a part of a living process which continues before and after him. He comes here to fulfil his responsibilities, and takes birth at a place where he has a current account.

Fate is nothing but the sum total of actions done over various incarnations which we do not remember now. They are our fate which no prayers can alter. Actions are rewarded and God sits in judgement to ensure good deeds are rewarded and bad deed do not go unpunished.

Prayers change your own mental environment. Gods do not at all mind it. God is helpless before your actions. If you have committed a wrong, you have to suffer.

The only issue with man is that he does not understand the language of gods.

What should man do then?

He has to be aware of his actions. Love is great but greater still is the sense of duty. Love can be sacrificed, not duty.

Man is helpless before gods. Are you capable of deciding where you will be born ? Who will father you? Who will mother you? What will be the colour if your skin ? Where you will be born? Whom you will marry? What will be the nature of your son? Can you surely say you will bear a son? When you will die? Do you know how and where and when?

If the answer is No, let us shun pride and be humble because we are under a divine command and we are dictated and monitored closely by angels.

Why are Sikhs so oriented towards service? They organize langars and reach wherever there is problem. How can they act to save people in distress? The Gurus offered their sons for the society. It was a great sacrifice. Such readiness to serve is not found in any other religion.

I told him that Sikhism is a recent happening as compared to other religions. The sacrifices made by the Sikh gurus are examples of the conduct of a high order. And a part of recent history. This recentness keeps inspiring the Sikhs for good deeds. The Gurus specified Selfless Service as a basic tenet of the faith. Remembering Him, Honest Work , and Sharing with others ...(Naam japo, Kirat karo, Vand chhako). They take up cudgels for protection of others is also part of their training and Guru's teachings. Bravery is filtered into the thinking processes of Sikh faith.
