Arab Critics Awards Celebrate Film Stars at Cannes

Hussein Fahmy Honored, Palestine Wins Top Awards

The Arab Cinema Center (ACC) celebrated the 10th edition of the Critics Awards for Arab Films at a ceremony held on the Plage des Palmes beach in Cannes, France, as part of the Cannes Film Festival's film market. The event was attended by a large number of Arab and international filmmakers and critics.

This year's edition honored a selection of the most prominent independent Arab film productions, as well as celebrating individuals who have played influential roles in supporting the film industry in the region.

The Arab Cinema Center presented the "Game Changer" award to Vincenzo Bugno in recognition of his efforts to promote Arab cinema globally, while actor Hussein Fahmy received the "Personality of the Year" award in recognition of his artistic career and ongoing contributions to supporting Arab cinema.

The Arab Cinema Center also awarded its 2026 Criticism Achievement Award to critic Tarek El Shenawy, along with Turkish critic Alin Taşçıyan, in recognition of their careers and contributions to supporting film criticism both regionally and internationally.

Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, co-founders of the Arab Cinema Center, stated that the award continues its mission of supporting the best Arab films and talents, providing them with a wider platform to reach global audiences. They emphasized that the tenth edition reflects the significant growth the awards have achieved in recent years.

They added that this year's jury comprised 307 film critics from 75 countries, representing one of the largest critical participations in the awards' history.

This year's winners included several prominent works, with the Palestinian film "Once Upon a Time in Gaza" by directors Tarzan Nasser and Arab Nasser winning the Best Feature Film award, while Annemarie Jacir received the Best Screenplay award for "Palestine 36." Shirin Daibis won the Best Director award for her film "What's Left of You," while Deborah Christelle Nanny won Best Actress for "A Sky Without Earth," and Adham Shukr won Best Actor for "The Colony."

Souad Bouchnak won Best Music for "Greece," while Amir Fakhreddine won Best Editing for the same film, and Helene Louvar won Best Cinematography for "Palestine 36."

In the documentary category, the Iraqi film "Lions on the Banks of the Tigris" by Zaradasht Ahmad won Best Documentary, while the Best Short Film award went to "I'm Glad You're Dead Now" by Tawfiq Barhoum.

#Sinners Achieves Historic Victories

Paul Thomas Anderson's "Battle by Battle" won Best Picture at the 98th Academy Awards, awarding Hollywood's highest honor to this multi-generational American comedy about political resistance.

The ceremony, which concluded early Monday morning, also saw Michael B. Jordan win Best Actor, and Autumn Dorald Arcabaw, cinematographer for "Sinners," make history as the first female cinematographer to win the award.

This was a long-awaited culmination for Anderson, the San Fernando Valley native who directed his first short film at the age of 18 and has been one of America's most prominent filmmakers for decades. Prior to Sunday, Anderson had never won an Oscar.

But the frontrunner, "Battle by Battle," swept the Oscars, winning six awards, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Anderson, her first Oscar for Best Casting, and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, who was absent from the ceremony.

"I wrote this film for my children to apologize to them for the mess we've left in this world—we're handing them that responsibility," Anderson said while accepting her Best Adapted Screenplay award. "But also to encourage them to be the generation that we hope will bring us some common sense and good morals."

"Sinners," which garnered a record 16 nominations, achieved some major, even historic, victories.

Widely beloved director Michael Coogler won his first Oscar in a career that began with Jordan's "Fruitvale Station" in 2013. And Irina Arkabau, the fourth female cinematographer to be nominated, won in a long-awaited triumph for women behind the camera. “I really want all the women here to stand,” Arcabaw said. “Because I feel like I wouldn’t be here without you.” Michael B. Jordan, one of Hollywood’s most popular stars, won Best Actor in one of the night’s most closely contested categories. The Dolby Theatre audience rose to their feet and gave him a thunderous ovation. “Mom, how are you?” Jordan said as he staggered onto the stage. The Oscars night belonged to Warner Bros., the studio behind “Battle After Battle” and Cogler’s vampire tale. It was an oddly poignant victory for the venerable studio, which just weeks earlier had agreed to sell to Paramount Skydance, the media giant founded by David Ellison. The deal, pending regulatory approval, has Hollywood bracing for more layoffs. “Sinners” and “Battle After Battle” were exceptions in Hollywood: original, big-budget films born from a personal vision. In a year dominated by anxieties about shrinking studios and the rise of artificial intelligence in the film industry, two films offered Hollywood a glimmer of hope. Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her portrayal of Shakespeare's Agnes in "Hamnet," becoming the first Irish actress to win the award. At an Oscars ceremony where winning any other acting award seemed a foregone conclusion, Buckley entered Sunday's ceremony at the Dolby Theatre as a strong contender. "It's Mother's Day in the UK," Buckley said on stage. "I would like to dedicate this award to the beautiful chaos that fills a mother's heart." From the outset, when host Conan O'Brien introduced this year's nominees with Amy Madigan's portrayal of the horror-thriller "Guns" in a pre-recorded segment, Sunday night's ceremony was somewhat bizarre, perhaps even chaotic, and preoccupied with the changing role of cinema in culture. Ironically, there was a tie in the Best Live Action Short Film category. As expected, the Netflix blockbuster "Demon Hunters K-Pop," which was the most-watched film of 2025, won the award for Best Animated Feature, as well as the award for Best Original Song for "Golden." This was a major win for Netflix, but a conditional victory for Sony Pictures, the film's producer. Although Sony developed and produced the film, it sold the streaming rights to "Demon Hunters K-Pop" to the streaming giant instead of releasing it in theaters. On Netflix, "Demon Hunters K-Pop" became a cultural phenomenon and the platform's biggest hit. It has surpassed 325 million views and continues to grow. Co-director Maggie Kang said, "This work is dedicated to Korea and to Koreans everywhere." In another Netflix production, Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" swept the awards, winning three prizes for its production design, costumes, makeup, hair, and overall production design. Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the horror-thriller "Guns," a victory that came 40 years after her first nomination in 1986 for "Twice in a Lifetime." Upon taking the stage, Madigan burst into laughter, exclaiming, "This is amazing!" In his second staging, O'Brien opened the Dolby Theatre show by acknowledging "troubled and frightening times." But he argued that the current geopolitical climate makes the Oscars even more powerful as a unifying force globally.

Paul Thomas Anderson's political thriller "One Battle After Another" won six awards at the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony last night, Sunday, while Ryan Coogler's horror thriller "Sinners" took home three awards, setting a record for the most wins by a Black director. Kirk Jones' comedy-drama "I Swear," which explores Tourette syndrome, stunned the audience at the ceremony hosted by Alan Cumming at London's Royal Festival Hall, winning two awards voted on by film industry professionals and a third chosen by the public. In fact, the film's star, Robert Aramayo, left the ceremony with two awards: one for Rising Star and the other for Best Actor, a category that boasts a stellar lineup. His win was met with great surprise and admiration from the audience. "I Swear" also garnered an award in the Best Casting category. The BAFTA nominations set the stage for a fierce competition at the British Academy Awards, with "Battle by Battle" receiving 14 nominations, narrowly edging out "Sinners" with 13. Chloé Zhao's adaptation of Shakespeare's "Hamnet" and Josh Safdie's "Marty Supreme" each received 11 nominations. At the end of the evening, "Battle by Battle" celebrated its six BAFTA wins: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn. The Best Supporting Actress award went to Wonmi Musako for "Sinners," which also won the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for Coogler and Best Original Score. With this, "Sinners" extended its record as the most nominated film by a Black director in the history of the British Academy Film Awards, winning three awards. Coogler became the first Black director to win the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay. Frankenstein also won three BAFTA awards: Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Hamnet took home two awards: Best British Film of the Year, and its star, Jessie Buckley, won Best Actress. Sarah Butt, BAFTA Chair, opened the 2026 awards ceremony on Sunday evening, praising this year's nominees and thanking them for giving audiences "windows into other worlds and, sometimes, yes, a refuge from our own." Director David Bornstein accepted the award for Best Documentary for his film "Mr. Nobody vs. Putin," referring to the United States, saying, "No matter how bad things get, whether in Russia or on the streets of Minneapolis, we are always faced with a moral choice." Among other political comments during the BAFTA awards ceremony, director Akinola Davis Jr., director of "My Father's Shadow," who won the award for Best Debut Work by a British Writer, Director, or Producer with his brother, writer and author Will Davis, concluded his acceptance speech with "Free Palestine!" Also on Sunday, Clare Binns, creative director of Picturehouse Cinemas and Picturehouse Entertainment, and "a driving force in UK film distribution," was honored with the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award. She told the BAFTA audience that the world needs more local cinemas. She also paid tribute to the late Robert Redford for founding the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival, saying, "He knew that above all, we must be prepared to take risks." Donna Langley, the first British woman to head a major Hollywood studio, received a BAFTA Fellowship, the British Academy's highest honor, telling the audience, "Integrity is a superpower."

At the close of the BAFTA Awards ceremony for "Battle After Battle," director Paul Thomas Anderson, to a standing ovation, praised the powerful films of the past year and addressed those who say films are no longer good: "Fuck you!

Σημαντική ηθοποιός με μακρά πορεία στο ελληνικό θέατρο και την τηλεόραση. Αποφοίτησε με άριστα από τη Δραματική Σχολή του Πέλου Κατσέλη. Ως ιδρύτρια και καλλιτεχνική διευθύντρια του θεάτρου «Διάχρονο» στην Αθήνα, συμβάλλει ενεργά στην πολιτιστική ζωή της χώρας.

Διδάσκει Τέχνη και Σχέδιο σε ευρωπαϊκά πανεπιστήμια. Κατέχει M.A. στη Σκηνοθεσία Τέχνης για Animation και DProf στη Σκηνογραφία από το Middlesex University. Έχει σκηνοθετήσει βραβευμένες ταινίες animation όπως το Agrinoui (2015) και το Struthio (2011). Αυτή την περίοδο εργάζεται στη σειρά κινουμένων σχεδίων Olympia the Horse.

Γεννημένος στη Δράμα και μεγαλωμένος στην Αθήνα, έχει εκπαιδευτεί στη δραματική σχολή του Γ. Θεοδοσιάδη, με επιπλέον σπουδές στη δημοσιογραφία και τη διοίκηση επιχειρήσεων. Από το 2005 δραστηριοποιείται σε θεατρικές και τηλεοπτικές παραγωγές, καθώς και σε κινηματογραφικά έργα μικρού και μεγάλου μήκους, τόσο ως ηθοποιός όσο και ως βοηθός σκηνοθέτη.

Μελίνα Πασχαλίδου – Υψίφωνος

Η σοπράνο Μελίνα Πασχαλίδου γεννήθηκε στη Στουτγκάρδη και σπούδασε Μονωδία στο Κρατικό Ωδείο Θεσσαλονίκης και στο Βερολίνο. Έχει ερμηνεύσει ρόλους σε όπερες των Μότσαρτ, Ροσίνι, Βέρντι και Στράους σε Ελλάδα και Γερμανία. Από το 2014 είναι σολίστ της Neue Sinfonieorchester Berlin και από το 2022 διδάσκει φωνητική στη Μουσική Σχολή Λουτρακίου.

Κωνσταντίνος Μπόζνος – Κιθαρίστας

Ο Κωνσταντίνος Μπόζνος κατάγεται από το Λουτράκι. Είναι κάτοχος πτυχίου Ειδικού Αρμονίας και βεβαίωσης σπουδών στην ηλεκτρική κιθάρα. Διδάσκει ηλεκτρική και ακουστική κιθάρα στη Μουσική Σχολή Λουτρακίου, όπου τα τελευταία χρόνια συμβάλλει ενεργά στη μουσική εκπαίδευση της περιοχής.

 

Το πρόγραμμα της βραδιάς των Κινηματογραφικών Βραβείων ΝΗΡΕΑΣ θα κλείσει με την προβολή της ταινίας μεγάλου μήκους «Βασίλισσες / Reinas» που ήταν η υποβολή της Ελβετίας για τα Όσκαρ, με βραβεία κοινού από Βερολίνο & Λοκάρνο, σε συνεργασία του φεστιβάλ FeCHA και με την υποστήριξη της Πρεσβείας της Κούβας.

Το 7ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Λουτρακίου ΓΕΦΥΡΕΣ θα συνεχιστεί με τριήμερο αφιέρωμα 23, 24 και 26 Ιουνίου στο θερινό κινηματογράφο Ηλέκτρα με προβολές βραβευμένων ταινιών σε παλαιότερα έτη του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου ΓΕΦΥΡΕΣ.

Tom Cruise participe à son dernier film au Festival de Cannes

Tom Cruise a gravi les marches du Palais des Festivals mercredi pour assister à l'avant-première de son dernier film, "Mission Impossible - Le Jugement Dernier", au 78e Festival de Cannes, trois ans après que le festival lui a décerné une Palme d'or d'honneur. Le film, qui s'appuie largement sur l'héritage de trois décennies de la franchise, a été bien accueilli par le public. Au Grand Lumière Theater, les applaudissements prolongés du générique de fin ont laissé place à quelques mots du réalisateur Christopher McQuarrie, qui a déclaré, à propos de Cruise : « Une grande partie de ma vie a été consacrée à des jeux d'imagination. Quelle année chargée pour la Tunisienne Hafsia Herzi ! Après avoir remporté le César de la meilleure actrice pour son rôle dans "Bourgo" de Stéphane Demoustier, l'actrice foulera désormais le tapis rouge du Festival de Cannes 2025 aux côtés de ses collègues actrices Nadia Melliti et Park Min-ji, où son nouveau long métrage en tant que réalisatrice, "La Petite Dernière", a été sélectionné en compétition officielle de la 78e édition. C'est son troisième film, le précédent était en compétition à Un Certain Regard, et le premier à la Semaine de la Critique. Le nouveau film est basé sur le roman autobiographique de Fatima Daas de 2020, « The Last ». Une fois de plus, Hafsia Herzi démontre ses talents de cinéaste et ses convictions de femme, de jeune fille ayant grandi dans les quartiers populaires de Marseille - et ce qui arrive aux jeunes qui s'éloignent de leur environnement d'origine pour des raisons personnelles, affectives, sexuelles, sociales ou politiques. Le film met en vedette la nouvelle venue Nadia Meliti dans le rôle de la fille d'immigrants algériens à Paris, qui lutte pour équilibrer les attentes de sa famille avec son identité émergente. Le casting secondaire comprend Park Ji-min, Louis Mimi, Mona Soualem et plusieurs acteurs non professionnels.

Le film se concentre sur Fatima, 17 ans, la plus jeune de trois filles, qui avance prudemment alors qu'elle cherche sa propre voie, aux prises avec ses désirs naissants, son attirance pour les femmes et sa loyauté envers sa famille franco-algérienne attentionnée. Elle commence l'université à Paris, où elle rencontre des gens, se fait des amis et explore un tout nouveau monde, tout en étant confrontée à un dilemme intemporel et douloureux : comment rester fidèle à soi-même lorsque concilier différentes parties de son identité semble impossible ?
