"THE SINGLE WHEEL" Poem by Jernail S Aanand

THE SINGLE WHEEL

Watching several serials,
One stumbles on the hard fact
That the only passion for
Your boys and girls is
To get married

And the only passion for married women
Is to recreate Mahabharata
In their homes
Unsparing all those
Not directly related to them

I pity young men and women
For whom the social engineers
Have made match fixing
A life long passion
And an eternal narrative

I wonder the respectable ladies
Who stay at homes
After their menfolk leave
How busy they are in slinging matches
And pulling down each other?

Pulling down is a social industry
And pulling up in the parlours
A vacant passion,
If beauty is only skin deep
And we have nothing to do except look beautiful.

Had these word-beaters
Believed in pursuing some noble mission,
Helping people in distress
Or in creative arts,
Society would have a loving ambience.

Can we afford to waste time
Which gods have put at our disposal
Fighting each other,
Downgrading each other
And creating a veritable hell in the home?

Women make half the population of the world
While the western world moves on an even keel,
The eastern, it appears,
Has moved on a single wheel.

Jernail S Aanand
