Maria
It was autumn,
One day,
In the back streets of Istanbul,
A rainy night
When I met you, Maria.
You rose like the sun within me,
With your moon-like brightness,
You drew me to you.
Your yellow, yellow hair,
Sea-blue eyes,
With your sweet gaze,
You were so enchanting, Maria.
Even the raindrops
Hurried to reach you.
Maria, oh Maria,
My heart in your heart,
My heart with you, my mind with you,
I burned, crying "my love, my love,"
I believed you.
Carried away by the wind of your love,
Like dried leaves,
I withered and scattered, Maria.
I knew you, I knew lies.
I knew you, I experienced pain.
My heart wounded, my heart closed.
Again, the back streets
Of Istanbul will purify me.
